What should be done before pregnancy, and what can be postponed?

Modern dentistry offers ways of teeth treatment and prosthetics that take several months, but guarantee perfect long-term result. This is dental implantation and orthodontic treatment (braces).
Of course, if you are not in a hurry, you may start this kind of treatment. But remember: your pregnancy should be several months away, because after the implantation it takes the implants 3-6 months to adjust in the bone tissue. During this period it might be necessary for you to take antibiotics or other medicine that is harmful for your baby's health. The same goes for braces. You should take care of teeth treatment extraction before pregnancy. Installation of braces is preferable after delivery and the end of breastfeeding.
If you smoked before pregnancy - quit now that you will have a baby! And see a dentist: some consequences of smoking should be urgently removed.
1. Smokers develop intensive dental plague. During pregnancy due to hormonal changes lack of mouth cavity hygiene, dental plague and calculus result in gums bleeding, gingival papillas growth, loose joining of teeth and gum and bad breath.
2. Vulnerability of oral cavity tissues increases the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis development. Smokers usually have chronic lack of vitamin С, as most of the vitamin C they receive with food goes for neutralization on harmful effect of nicotine and different tars. Lack of this vitamin causes vulnerability of oral cavity tissues, thus increasing the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis.
Pregnant women who used to smoke need to have professional oral cavity cleaning and prevention measures every month.
3. Smokers' increased teeth and gums tenderness, caused by lack of calcium and mineral, habitual for pregnant, as the lacking microelements for the baby are taken from mother's bone tissue and teeth.
Vitamins and minerals, recommended by gynecologists, may be very helpful, but despite them pregnant women may have white chalky stains on teeth enamel. In such cases enamel mineralization with fluorine and calcium is necessary. For patients with serious enamel defects dentists recommend professional cleaning every 3 months, cavities treatment and special toothpaste instead of usual one during a certain period.
As you see, pregnancy is a great opportunity to take care of your own as well as of your baby's health. To cure cavities and oral cavity inflammations is to protect your baby from pre-natal contamination and cavities development in the future.
There is one more reason to do this in due time - when the child is born, you will hardly have enough free time to take care of your teeth.
