Pregnancy is wonderful, but it is dangerous for your teeth
Hormonal changes during pregnancy cause immune system suppression, thus favoring germs reproduction in the oral cavity. That is why during pregnancy cavities develop twice as fast. Uncured cavities develop into endodontitis (tooth root inflammation) and periodontitis. Both of them must be cured because infection from inflamed teeth and gums penetrates into baby's body and causes further allergies and asthenia.
Pregnancy requires maximum resources of mother's body. Bones formation requires large amounts of calcium, fluorine, phosphor and other minerals. If the woman doesn't receive enough of some of them, they are taken from her bones and teeth. Such "borrowings" are dangerous for future mother's bone tissue and teeth. Bones become more brittle and cavities develop much faster.
What are the problems future mother may face?

Pregnancy gingivitis - gums inflammation - is caused by bacteria in food remains and dental plague. As a rule, pregnant women often want to "scratch gums" with a toothbrush. Gingivitis evidence increase at the last months of pregnancy. To relieve these problems and prevent complications pregnant women need thorough hygiene of oral cavity and professional dental cleaning as well as anti-inflammatory treatment once a month. Remember: uncured gingivitis causes teeth loss and is sometimes even more dangerous than cavities.
Pregnancy periodontitis is a widespread inflammatory decease of oral cavity characterized by dentogingival attachments damage and gingival pockets development. During pregnancy insufficient blood supply and weak immune system, combined with bad oral cavity hygiene, occlusion pathologies and different chronic deceases may cause development or aggravation of periodontitis. Besides, pregnancy periodontitis may be caused by vitamin C deficiency, usually followed by increased veins brittleness. According to scientists, periodontitis increases the risk of pregnancy complications even more than smoking or alcohol. Besides, women who have inflammatory deceases of the oral cavity have 15% more risk of going into preterm labor.
Gums bleeding frequently occurs during pregnancy. The bleeding is partly caused by lack of calcium, especially in the second half of the pregnancy, when baby's bones and milk teeth are formed. During pregnancy mineralization of milk teeth crowns takes place, which constitute the base of solid tissues and teeth enamel. Besides, at the end of pregnancy crowns of first permanent cheek teeth are mineralized as well. This process is extremely important, that's why different problems during pregnancy (early or late toxicosis, etc.) may have negative impact on baby's teeth. Although it may seem unusual, it's dentist who should mostly determine what vitamins and microelements future mother should take.
Cavities. Pregnancy cavities is even more dangerous. Lack of calcium, weak immune system, reproduction of germs, changes in saliva composition cause cavities. This decease as well as its complications (endodontitis and periodontitis) can bring a lot of troubles to future mother. Besides, mother's having cavities means baby's having cavities. Close contact with mother during first months of life results in contamination by mother's germs causing cavities. Thus even first teeth of the baby can be affected by cavities.
